Bloomington Jefferson Girls Hockey played Edina in the semifinals of the 2AA Section Girls Hockey Tournament at Bloomington Ice Garden on Tuesday, February 11, at 8:00 p.m. The game was scoreless for the Jaguars and they lost 6-0. They beat Holy Family/Waconia 6-2 three days earlier in the quarterfinals.
Starting for Jefferson was Holly Dietzler, Kelsey Cline, Alexandra Brolsma, Erika Beek, and Olivia Spellmire. Bailey Plaman was the goalie.
The competition was equally matched at the beginning of the first period. Both Edina and Jefferson had a few shots on goal and the teams had equal playing time on each side of the ice.
The first Edina goal came at 6:31 into the first period by Nicole Rash and was assisted by Taylor Williamson. The goal gave Edina a boost and they dominated the puck, taking one shot after another.
Jefferson’s Spellmire was called for tripping at 6:55 in the first period. Jefferson’s Britta Mach made a big defensive play and cleared the puck helping short-handed Jefferson keep Edina out of the net.
Edina’s second goal came at 9:00 by Liz Trautz and was assisted by Nicole Rash.
Again Edina was energized by the goal. Jefferson’s Erika Beek matched their energy and made a big play to keep Jefferson in control of the puck. However Edina’s defense would not allow Jefferson to score.
The third Edina goal of the first period was Trautz’s second and was assisted by Jackie Pieper and Shelby Anderson. Immediately after Jefferson called a time out.
The first period ended 3-0 Edina.
The second period started with Edina having a power play after Jefferson’s Sarah Freschi was penalized for holding at the end of the first period. Goalie Bailey Plaman made a diving save and helped Jefferson contain Edina.
At 6:14 Plaman slid on her knees to the left to stop an unguarded Pieper but Pieper went right and scored her first goal and the team’s fourth. Emma Schatz assisted.
A couple minutes later Kelsey Cline was called for tripping. Alexandra Brolsma made a strong play to take an unguarded shot on goal. The short-handed shot was stopped by Edina goalie Rebecca Sonnek.
Edina’s fifth goal and second of the period was by Jane Thotland and was assisted by Kate Murray and Emily Fuchs. The second period ended 5-0.
The final goal of the game at 59 seconds into the third period gave Liz Trautz a hat trick and Edina the 6-0 win. Riley Anderson assisted.
Edina will play Eden Prairie in the 2AA Girls Hockey Section Championship on Friday, February 15, at Bloomington Ice Garden. Game time begins at 7:00 p.m.
